G&C COVID-19 - Essential Business

G&C COVID-19 - Essential Business

What is an essential business? This term has been used over the past few weeks as we receive COVID-19 updates from our state and federal governments. Essential businesses are businesses that our society needs in order to continue on with our lives in critical areas. Some examples include grocery stores, healthcare facilities, banks, gas stations, and automotive repair facilities.  G&C falls into the essential business category as we are an automotive repair facility. We are needed by the community to make sure that everyone working in other essential businesses has a safe vehicle in which to get to work. At G&C we are sanitizing everything that is considered a high traffic area, every hour. We are using plastic gloves, steering wheel covers, and Lysol wipes for anything touched in your vehicle. Running ozone machines at night is something else we are doing to disinfect the air in our facilities. These are just a few of the precautions that G&C is taking in order to kee ... read more

Winter Preparedness (Part 2)

Winter Preparedness (Part 2)

Before you were stranded on the side of the road, you brought your vehicle by a local shop to have the check engine light diagnosed.  Turns out that you had just left your gas cap off during your last Costco run, but they fixed you up, and got you home in time for dinner.  What you couldn’t believe is the laundry list of other items they “suggested” you have done to your vehicle:  A battery terminal service?  Shockingly, these recommendations do have a purpose.  During the winter months, small problems are amplified, and large problems can quickly get out of hand.  Any perceived engine problems, or issues that you, the driver can feel, need to be addressed as soon as possible.  This is true at any time of the year, but especially so heading into the winter months.  At the very least, what could’ve been a simple repair before winter may be much more expensive after exposure to suboptimal temperatures, or ... read more

Winter Preparedness (Part 1)

You’re stranded on the side of the road.  It’s the dead of winter, and the snow is piling heavy outside your window.   Also, smoke?  At G&C Tire & Auto, your safety and peace of mind comes first, so we’d like to share with you these tips to get you ready for winter! Hearkening back to our post on predictive maintenance: routine, timely maintenance is the first key to safe travels during wintertime.  One of the most forgotten of these services is the oil change.  Generally an oil change is recommended every 3000 – 5000 miles.  With full synthetic oil, 5000+ miles can easily be attained.  With a synthetic blend (regular oil) 3000 miles is generally the safest bet.  Tires are another oft forgotten, or ignored, part of the maintenance routine.  In the winter, they take on a whole new importance.  As your tires wear, they provide less and less grip in an everyday driving e ... read more

The Preventive Lifestyle

The Preventive Lifestyle

It’s hot, you’re wet, and it’s the middle of winter.  What happened? You woke up in the morning, headed downstairs, and went to get your coffee.  Unfortunately, in your usual early morning haze the day before, you didn’t realize that you were out of coffee after your third cup.  Now, today, you have no coffee and are stuck in a coffee deprived stupor.  So, you decide to visit your favorite coffee shack, but the line is long, and they accidentally give you decaf.  Now you’re tired, late for work, all the while drinking decaf coffee.    As you finally reach your office, light blinks on the dash of your car, what is it?  These hieroglyphs don’t make any sense, you think.  And then it dawns on you: “When is the last time I had my oil changed?”  Like your coffee, you’d forgotten. Now you’re tired, late for work, have decaf coffee, and need an oil change.  Days like these a ... read more

Why auto repair shops are going digital, and what's in it for you

Auto repair shops have recently been moving towards making their repair order and reporting process paperless. They aren’t the first industry to be doing so, and the financial, environmental, and organizational benefits have been made clear by the many industries that have come before them in the journey to a paperless workplace. Printing and paper costs are cut, paper waste is eliminated, and everything is stored in one place, with easy search functions and secure back-ups. This transition, however, isn’t just affecting the shop and its employees. It’s also making a big impact on their customers. Typically, when you take your car in to the shop, your car’s diagnosis and necessary repairs are explained to you by your service advisor, and it’s up to you to take that information at face value. That’s not always easy. Being the humans that we are, we want to know why. We like to ask how? And well, are you sure? It can be difficult to get on board with ... read more

Coolant leak creates tiny stalactites

Coolant leak creates tiny stalactites

Coolant leaks don't normally do this, but we had an odd occurrence in the shop today when we found some coolant fluid that had leaked and formed icicle-shaped drips that ended up drying that way. This happened because this coolant fluid had sealant in it that dries when it hits air (not desirable for coolant fluid). Leaks like this can cause future problems - clogs in the heater core, etc - so we're glad we caught it when we did
